OAKLAND — A 40-year-old San Leandro woman was shot dead early Sunday while driving in East Oakland, authorities said.
Her name has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
The shooting happened at about 1:11 a.m. Sunday on MacArthur Boulevard near 102nd Avenue, not far from the San Leandro border.
Police said the woman was alone in her car driving eastbound when shots were fired at the vehicle, fatally wounding her. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Police are trying to determine a motive for the shooting, whether she was the intended target and if the shots were fired by someone on the street or in another vehicle.
The killing is the 63rd homicide investigated by the Oakland Police Department this year. Last year at this time, OPD had investigated 78 homicides in the city.
