Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo would reportedly prefer a trade to a franchise that can a) offer him sunshine, b) is located in a big market and c) gives him a shot at competing for an NBA title. The Los Angeles Lakers check all three boxes, spelling excellent news in their pursuit of a potential Giannis trade before the Feb. 5 deadline.
According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Antetokounmpo, a free agent in 2027, will only sign off on a trade if all those three criteria are met.
“Preferably, I think he would like to have some sun. He’d like to be, probably, in a big market,” Haynes told veteran NBA analyst Rachel Nichols on Saturday.
“Outside of that, he just wants to be on a team where he can contend for a championship. He’s been very adamant about that being a main priority.”
Per multiple insiders, Antetokounmpo has the leverage in dictating his next landing spot, even though he’s signed through at least the 2026-27 season. As such, the Bucks will reportedly work closely with him before moving their longtime franchise star.
Potential Lakers Trade for Giannis
For the Lakers to truly pull off a Giannis trade, it’d require them to part with a package built around budding star Austin Reaves. However, such a deal could be complicated as Reaves, who has a player option for the 2026-27 campaign, is expected to test free agency next summer to cash in on his career-best season.
As such, Reaves may have to be comfortable signing a long-term deal with the Bucks next year for a Giannis to Lakers situation to materialize.
Per The Ringer’s Zach Lowe, the Lakers face a bit of a dilemma: they’d prefer to hold on to Reaves, but they know he’s the piece teams will covet in any significant trade.
“I think the Lakers are, like there’s been this dichotomy of either the Lakers stand pat or they try to make some crazy Giannis trade that involves Reaves and all their picks,” Lowe said on a potential Giannis to Lakers trade on Thursday.
“There may be a middle ground where the Lakers, there’s some buzz about could they sort of make a fringey trade to try to upgrade this roster. I think as this new ownership comes in, I think they’re trying to maximize this team.”
Other Giannis Trade Suitors
Haynes added in his reporting on Saturday that the New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs are the five teams to watch in a potential trade for the two-time MVP.
While the Knicks have long been viewed as the favorite to land Antetokounmpo, the 2021 NBA Finals MVP may be warming up to the idea of playing in Miami. According to NBA insider Sam Amick, Antetokounmpo would love to land with the Heat if his preferred trade to the Knicks doesn’t materialize.
“The Miami Heat, for example, are often handicapped by league insiders as a place that Antetokounmpo might be willing to call his new basketball home,” Amick reported on Dec. 12.
“Pat Riley and company could offer the Bucks a yacht full of draft assets, all their best young players (All-Star Tyler Herro, promising young big man Kel’el Ware, small forward Jaime Jaquez Jr.) and salary filler (Terry Rozier, if the NBA allows it) to make the numbers work.”
Amick reported something similar on his appearance on FanDuel TV recently.
“…If the Knicks thing is too hard to execute, he may look at Miami and try to make that work with some of those guys they have,” Amick said.
