The Toronto Blue Jays could look to bring back an intriguing pitcher.
Toronto has been active this offseason, as the Blue Jays have landed Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce to help build out their rotation. Toronto is now expected to pursue a batter and some bullpen help.
Blue Jays insider Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reported the team is talking to, and could bring back left-handed reliever Tim Mayza.
“Could left-hander Tim Mayza find his way back to the Blue Jays, perhaps on a minor-league deal?,” Nicholson-Smith wrote.
The Blue Jays selected Mayza in the 12th round of the 2013 MLB Draft, and he made his MLB debut in 2017. He was part of Toronto’s roster from 2017 until 2024, when he was released.
During his Blue Jays tenure, Mayza was an important left-hander out of the bullpen, which is a need for Toronto. The Blue Jays have Mason Fluharty, Brendon Little, and Eric Lauer as left-handers out of the bullpen. But Toronto lost trust in Little down the stretch. So, the Blue Jays could look to add another left-hander.
Mayza spent last season in the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies organizations. He went 0-0 with a 3.78 ERA in 15 games last season, showing he can be an effective reliever in the majors.
Blue Jays Make Intriguing Rule 5 Pick
Toronto did add a potential bullpen piece on Wednesday.
The Blue Jays selected right-hander Spencer Miles from the San Francisco Giants in the Rule 5 Draft. He will enter spring training competing for a roster spot, alongside Angel Bastardo, whom they selected in the Rule 5 Draft last season. He spent the entire year rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Both pitchers will need to spend the entire season on Toronto’s 26-man roster.
“Both of them, we think, have stuff upside to impact us,” Blue Jays assistant general manager Mike Murov said Wednesday as the Winter Meetings wrapped up. “Our hope is both guys are really good and we’re not even worried about that. But we’ll let them tell us.”
Miles spent the 2025 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. He’s a 6-foot-3 right-hander who was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft. Due to the injuries, Miles has pitched just 14 professional innings, so he could have his hands full making the roster.
Toronto has Focused on Pitching
The Blue Jays made an emphasis on adding pitching this offseason.
Toronto signed Cease and Ponce, and the team is looking to add more pitching. Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said the team will look at bullpen options as the offseason continues.
“We don’t feel like we need to acquire pitching in terms of just adding depth or adding numbers. But if there’s a way that we can add some level of impact to our ‘pen, we’d be open to it,” Atkins said.
The Blue Jays have been linked to the elite-level relievers in free agency to replace Jeff Hoffman at closer. But, Atkins won’t push anything as he feels fine if Hoffman remains their closer.
“It’s hard to do better than Jeff Hoffman,” Atkins concluded.
