It seems as if the legendary former Charger Philip Rivers will find a new home.
After a successful workout with the Indianapolis Colts, the 44 year old QB is making a comeback to the NFL. This comes after a season-ending injury to QB Daniel Jones, who had led the Colts to an 8-2 start before losing the last three games while playing with a fractured fibula.
Rivers’ last game as a pro came in January of 2021, when he played for the Colts. He just turned 44 on Monday and has 10 children.
Most importantly in this matter is that Rivers was just announced as a semifinalist for the Hall of Fame class of 2026. This signing would take him off the list as no player active on an NFL roster can be nominated.
Also with this signing, Philip rivers becomes the fifth oldest quarterback to potentially start an NFL game. He will most likely join Tom Brady, Warren Moon, Vinny Testaverde, George Blanda, and Steve Deberg as the only quarterbacks to play in a game at the age of 44 or older.
Chargers fans will be stunned with this news of course as most of his 17 seasons in the NFL came with the franchise. With the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, Rivers built a Hall of Fame resume that now will have to wait just a little bit longer before coming to fruition due to this signing.
In his career, Rivers was an eight time Pro Bowler who has risen as high as seventh on the all time passing yards charts(63,440) and sixth all time in terms of passing touchdowns with 421. However, Rivers’ record in the postseason always left much to be desired for both Chargers and Colts fans alike, as he went only 5-7 throughout his career in the playoffs.
Still, Colts fans should be pleased with this signing. After all, the Colts QB room is not in the best state at the moment. What with Anthony Richardson dealing with an orbital fracture and having struggled to get his career going and with Brett Rypien the only QB on the practice squad, this move felt like a no-brainer for the Chargers. That is, if 44 is just a number for Rivers.
The Colts end the season with perhaps the toughest schedule of any NFL team. They go on the road to Seattle this weekend to face a hot Seahawks team, then close with the 49ers, Jaguars and Texans. With their 8-5 record, they have fallen out of the No. 1 seed and in fact, have fallen out of first place in the NFC South with their recent losses to the Texans and amidst a Jags win streak.
It is not likely Rivers will play this week. That duty could go to rookie QB Riley Leonard, who replaced Jones after his injury in the loss to the Jaguars this weekend. Still, having a player of Rivers’ caliber on the roster has to feel better for Colts fans…and potentially very weird and perplexing to Chargers fans.
