Nick Sanchez surprised the NASCAR world over the weekend by announcing he will not return to Big Machine Racing for the 2026 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series season.
Sanchez shared the update on social media, calling the change unexpected but saying he was thankful for his time with the group. What comes next for the 24-year-old driver after a strong rookie year that included his first career win and steady results?
Nick Sanchez Speaks on His Exit
Sanchez said he learned of the decision only days before posting the announcement.
“Over the weekend, I was informed that I will not be driving the No.48 for Big Machine Racing in 2026,” he wrote. “I’m grateful to Scott Borchetta, Patrick Donahue, everyone at Chevrolet, and the whole team. I am proud of all we have accomplished this year, including our win. Unfortunate timing and circumstances, but it’s strictly business. When one door closes, another one opens. Excited about what is ahead!”
Sanchez, born June 10, 2001, entered NASCAR as the 2022 ARCA Menards Series champion. He joined the NASCAR Xfinity Series full-time in 2025 and quickly proved he could compete. He earned his first win at Texas Motor Speedway in June, a key moment that helped secure his playoff spot.
Big Machine Racing’s Position
Big Machine Racing, owned by music executive Scott Borchetta, has used the No. 48 Chevrolet to help develop rising drivers. Sanchez was praised by the team in September when the extension was announced, with leadership noting his progress and the boost he brought to the program.
Back in September, Nick Sanchez, in conversation with Frontstretch, made it clear he expected to return to Big Machine Racing for the following season. When asked directly about his future with the team, Sanchez said, “Unless they tell me otherwise. That’s our approach. It hasn’t even been a question. Just go race this year and go race next year.”
Sanchez also praised the progress inside the Big Machine Racing camp and pointed to steady growth through the year. “How we end this year is how we’re going to start next year, truthfully. I think we’re in a good place. I feel like I’m driving the best I have in my career, and I still have a lot of room to get better and grow.”
What Comes Next for Sanchez
Sanchez enters the 2026 driver market with a strong record and ample room for growth. Teams that need a proven young driver may see him as a valuable option. His experience with Rev Racing during his ARCA years could make them a potential landing spot, although several mid-tier NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series teams may also consider adding him.
Reactions online focused on the timing and nature of the move. Guhle wrote, “That’s crazy, must be a money issue because he has the talent to be there.”
Another fan added, “informing him how, of all times, weeks after the season ended? Is the hell wrong with that team? Somebody with money is all I can assume.”
Phill Bennetzen said, “helluva time to find out you have no ride for next year.” Jim Cassidy, the president of Cassidy Sport Advisory, shared support, writing, “As a longtime Nick Sanchez fan, I’ve seen the hard work, the progress, and know you’re only getting started. Here, if I can help.”
