Tua Tagovailoa Makes Comments That Could Concern Dolphins Fans

If there has been one thing that Dolphins fans have been concerned about with QB Tua Tagovailoa, it is his health. After his recent comments made throughout the week, that concern level should rise.

While Tua’s play hasn’t exactly been stellar, questions have arisen about Tua’s aggression as a playmaker. With Dolphins fans knowing the risks Tua faces, chances are they going to be unhappy with the Dolphins’ approach…and Tua’s opinion on the matter.

Growing Concerns Over Tua’s Playing Style

Following the Dolphins’ recent win over the Saints last Sunday, Tagovailoa was asked about a certain play where he ran the football on third down but slid before the line to gain. Tua’s cryptic response? “I gotta make the right decision for the team and keep us on the field. I gotta be better there.” He also mentioned that he and some coaches were working on execution in those areas as well as extend drives to keep the team on schedule.

So then why should Dolphins fans be worried? Should Tua run the ball more often, he will expose himself to more hits. What with his injury history, no one would want to see him get seriously injured again.

Tagovailoa has already suffered three concussions throughout his NFL career, several being more worrying than the next. Several Dolphins fans will remember the infamous “fencing position” concussion Tua suffered in the 2022 regular season against the Bengals that caused him to curl his fingers.

He also suffered yet another worrying concussion last year against the Bills where he stayed for a very long time. After that, questions arose concerning his retirement and whether or not coaches and fans alike thought it would be right for him to continue playing with these worrying head injuries.

Performance Issues Add a New Layer to the Debate

This year, the conversation hasn’t really extended to his injury history, but to his overall play. There have been clear signs that Tua’s mechanics have declined and he has been largely inconsistent in their play. While the Dolphins have gone on a recent win streak, their play has been more predicated on the run game rather than through the air.

With a game against the Jets in brutal weather conditions upcoming, Tua is looking to get right in an environment in which he has typically struggled. After all, throughout his career, he is 0-7 when the Dolphins play in weather under 46 degrees.

Still, despite countless rumors over his status for this week’s game, whether it be injury worries or just inconsistency, he is not listed on the injury report and is expected to play today. This is what we get paid to do. To play football regardless of if it’s raining, it’s snowing, it’s sleeting, it’s hot, it’s hot, it’s cold.” Tua recently said about his struggles in cold weather.

Those comments, quite frankly, are starkly clear to Dolphins fans. The ones about running the football consistently, may not be. Still, the Dolphins want to find different ways to win. For better or for worse.
