Sharks let win slip away in New York

NEW YORK — Brady Skjei completed the comeback for the New York Rangers, scoring the game-winning goal on a 2 on 1 in overtime.

The Rangers clinched the 3-2 overtime win over the Sharks after they scored the tying goal with less than three minutes to play in the third period.

Joonas Donskoi put the Sharks ahead 2-1 at 4:59 of the second, the first tally from the team’s all Scandinavian line trio that includes he, Antti Suomela and Marcus Sorensen. Donskoi scored on a 3-on-1, punching in a through-the-slot feed from Suomela after Brent Burns sent the line off on the rush with a sharp pass out of the defensive zone.

Brendan Smith tied the game at 17:21 of the third, one timing a feed from Pavel Buchnevich into the top-left corner.

The Sharks and Rangers went into the first intermission tied after trading highlight reel goals. Marcus Sorensen opened the scoring at 4:31, treating Rangers defenseman Brady Skjei like a pylon by sliding the puck past him on the right and then to the left before beating goalie Henrik Lundqvist with a shot to the upper shelf.

Timo Meier put Sorensen in a one-on-one race with Skjei by feeding him the puck in open ice through the neutral zone. Burns earned his first point of the night by recording the secondary assist.

The Rangers answered at 13:52 when Brett Howden scored through Dell’s with a no-look backhanded shot that he first slid through his own legs with his back facing the net. The Sharks challenged the play for being offside, but the evidence was ruled inconclusive.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist made 44 saves in the win.
