The veteran first baseman played for Triple-A Albuquerque Thursday night, batting 1-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a sacrifice fly.

Alonso, 32, struggled this season, prompting his release by the Chicago White Sox on July 3. He slashed .178/.275/.301 in 251 plate appearances.

Alonso, a left-handed hitter, was productive with Cleveland last season, batting .250 with 23 homers and a .738 OPS in 145 games for the Indians. In 2017, Alonso was an all-star during a season when he played for both Oakland and Seattle. In 142 games he hit a combined .266 with a .866 OPS, slugged 28 home runs and drove in 67 runs.

The Rockies might be looking for help off the bench. Veteran first baseman Mark Reynolds has struggled, batting .168 with four home runs and 20 RBIs. As a pinch hitter, Reynolds is 2-for-36 with one home run and 18 strikeouts.

The Rockies signed veteran Daniel Murphy, 34, during the offseason to be their primary first baseman. Murphy, who’s been dealing with an injured left index finger all season, has not been as productive as the Rockies had hoped. He recently described his performance as “fair.” Murphy enters the second half of the season slashing .274/.328./.447 with seven home runs.
