Doh! MLB apologizes for Jackie Robinson hats featuring insensitive logo

If you’re wondering about the high cost of racism, wonder no more. It’s $37.99, or at least it was this weekend.

That’s when major league baseball celebrated the 71st anniversary of the game in which Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. The annual observation is part history lesson, part celebration and part awareness.

This year Chief Wahoo crashed the party.

Incredible but true. An MLB-approved hat ($37.99 retail) featuring Robinson’s iconic No. 42 and the Cleveland Indians logo deemed so insensitive and racist that it will be phased out, after decades of protest and debate, after this year.

Here’s Maury Brown of Forbes for the play-by-play:

“Notified of the product being for sale, the league pulled it from the (online store), said that it was a mistake and had somehow slipped through the cracks. As (commissioner Rob) Manfred had said at the beginning of the year about the upcoming change of the logo, the league said they are about a culture of inclusion and diversity in the game, and were sorry that the product had been available for sale.”

As typically happens in these sorts of matters, a sober, even-minded, sincere conversation sprung up on Twitter:

I completely understand Indians fans wanting to keep Chief Wahoo when you consider all of the Championships and Rings they have won wearing that hat

Chief Wahoo has been around since 1932. Didn’t seem to be an issue until the public was told to be offended. Now you are publicly shamed if you don’t denounce Chief Wahoo. Thanks language police.
