After power back into playoff contention with an incredible July, the Rockies have hit a slump, recording a paltry 2-6 record so far in August.
The Rockies’ bats have seemingly gone cold again as the team is averaging just three runs a game this month entering Thursday night’s game — a sizable drop from the 4.7 they’re averaging on the year.
In the past 16 games, they’re hitting just .228 as a team. One solution? Mark Kiszla ponders if a return of Matt Holliday’s bat could “put a charge in the Rockies’ offense? Maybe. Maybe not. But I do know this: The sight of Big Daddy digging in the batter’s box would cause a delirious Coors crowd to blow the top off the party deck.”
The uncharacteristic struggles at the plate have been offset by the emergence of a starting rotation that hasn’t been hurt by the curse of Coors Field. Kyle Freeland is one example. The homegrown pitcher “has emerged as Colorado’s best starting pitcher, and with a home ERA of 2.18, the 25-year-old left-hander is on pace to break Jorge De La Rosa’s club record for the best single-season ERA at Coors Field,” Kyle Newman writes.
But it doesn’t matter how well the starters fare if the bullpen struggles. On case is closer Wade Davis — in eight games from July 24-Aug. 6, he’s posted a 12.27 ERA. But if he can return to even half of what he could do from 2014-17 when he went 23-6 with a 1.45 ERA, that would be pivotal for Colorado’s postseason dreams.
There’s still time for the Rockies to right the ship. But also time to sink it.
