Broncos agree to rookie contract terms with third-round OLB Jonah Elliss

???? Broncos Mailbag: Are there any surprise roster moves in store this summer for Sean Payton’s team?

  • The Broncos and third-round draft pick Jonah Elliss on Tuesday agreed to terms on a four-year rookie contract, a source confirmed to The Denver Post.

Elliss, the No. 76 overall  pick, is the sixth of Denver’s seven draft picks to sign his rookie contract. It is slated to be worth $5.87 million and comes with a $1.09 million signing bonus.

Elliss, 21, had a terrific junior season at Utah, racking up 12 sacks and 16 tackles for loss in 10 games. A shoulder injury cost him the end of the season and kept him limited during last weekend’s rookie minicamp in Denver, but the Broncos expect him to be fully healthy by the end of this month.

Even with a bit of a ramp up, Denver coach Sean Payton had a favorable first impression during rookie minicamp.

“Good. Really good,” Payton said. “… It’s hard for him to finish rushing the passer in some of these drills, but he has good football makeup. He’s tough.”

Elliss told reporters after Saturday’s practice that he was enjoying his first weekend on the field with the organization.

“It’s been awesome,” he said. “The coaches know what they are doing and are treating us well. They’re always trying to put us first, so that’s a huge positive. The culture here already is awesome.”

Elliss’ father, Luther, was a long-time defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions and finished his playing career in Denver in 2004. He later returned to the Broncos as the team chaplain in 2015 and 2016.

With Elliss signed, the lone remaining unsigned draft pick is fourth-round wide receiver Troy Franklin.
