Athletes of the Week: Top Bay Area performers


Luke Casper, Bellarmine

Sport: Tennis

Class: Sophomore

The USTA National Winter champion in the boys 16s division helped deliver a seventh CCS title for the Bells by anchoring the singles lineup at the No. 1 spot in a rematch of last year’s final. The 16-year-old notched a 6-2, 6-1 victory over UC Davis-bound Andrei Volgin, who suffered his first loss as a senior at Menlo School.

Brooke Schaffer, St. Francis

Sport: Swimming

Class: Senior

Events: 50- and 100-yard freestyle, relays

The UCLA-bound sprinter finished as the runner-up in the 50 and 100 free by a combined 0.33 seconds and anchored the 400 free relay to close out the CIF state swimming and diving championships, thereby helping the Lancers claim third place in the overall standings.

East Bay

Allen Dempster, San Ramon Valley

Sport: Swimming

Class: Junior

Events: 100-yard backstroke, 200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay

Dempster won the CIF state championship in the boys 100 backstroke with a school record of 48.44 seconds. He also swam the anchor leg on the fifth-place 400 freestyle relay that clinched the team title for the Wolves and also on the fifth-place 200 medley relay.

Elizabeth Avery, Bishop O’Dowd

Sport: Softball

Class: Senior

Position: Pitcher

Avery fired a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts and only one walk, and also went 4 for 4 at the plate with a home run, two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI in an 8-0 victory over Arroyo. Two days later, she threw a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 2-0 win over Castro Valley. At the plate, Avery hit a double and scored a run.
