67 Colorado community college students can win scholarships if vaccinated

Sixty-seven Colorado community college students who get the COVID vaccination will receive scholarships for school through a state partnership with Amazon, officials announced Wednesday.

It’s the latest giveaway Colorado officials have pursued to increase vaccination rates, despite the rates dropping at the end of the state’s $1 million vaccine lottery.

“The science is clear. COVID is a dangerous infectious disease,” Colorado Community College System Chancellor Joe Garcia said at a news conference. “But it’s just as clear that vaccinations matter, that people who are vaccinated are not the ones who are getting sick now. If we want our colleges to be effective, if we want our communities to be safe, we need our students to get vaccinated.”

Amazon will provide the full $75,000 to the Colorado Community College System. Five students at each of Colorado’s 13 community colleges will each receive a $1,000 scholarship and two students across the system will receive $5,000 each (considered a full ride).

Gov. Jared Polis said about 15% of Coloradans are not necessarily opposed to getting the vaccine — they just haven’t gotten them.

“We know how to end the pandemic. It’s in our power to do so, and we need to do so,” Polis said.

Students in Colorado’s community colleges are not required to get vaccinated unless they live in residence halls or participate in intercollegiate athletics, Garcia said. But the colleges are encouraging students to take them and are ensuring that they are available.

Students who get vaccinated or have already been vaccinated must register by Sept. 15 for the scholarship giveaway at cccs.edu/shot-at-a-scholarship/.

Gov. Jared Polis also announced Wednesday that people who get vaccinated at certain sites will be eligible for $100 Walmart gift cards. For more information on the giveaway, go to cocomebackcash.com.
