Fans tuning in to watch the Laver Cup at the O2 Arena in London this weekend will notice something unique in tennis – the court is black.

It is the only tournament on the tennis calendar that is charcoal black.

The court has been this colour ever since the first edition of the Laver Cup in 2017.

With the icy-white lines, dimmed lights and vibrant blue and red shirts of Team Europe and Team World, the Laver Cup has been a stunning visual spectacle for tennis fans watching in stands and on sofas.

Here is the reasoning behind the now-iconic black court.

Why is the court at the Laver Cup black?

The Laver Cup court is black to make the tournament look an feel different compared to the other competitions on the tennis tour.

In 2019, Laver Cup managing director Steve Zacks said: ‘It’s unlike anything our fans have experienced before. It’s innovative and new, while respecting the traditions of tennis.

‘We needed a color that stood apart. The U.S. Open is blue, the French Open has the red clay, Wimbledon is green and purple, and the Australian Open is blue and white. Nobody was black.’

Speaking in 2019 about the colour of the surface, Roger Federer said: ‘The black court is the centerpiece of a really cool, contemporary look over all that is such a big part of how people identify with the Laver Cup.

‘The whole arena is dramatic, with the lighting, the screens around the court, the team colors and benches — all innovations that haven’t ever really been a part of tennis before.’

Federer added: ‘As a player, it’s fun to mix things up and compete in a very different atmosphere to our usual weeks on the tour.

‘And I hope that what we’ve done with the Laver Cup, by doing things a bit differently and with a 21st-century outlook, will help bring new fans to tennis.’

What surface is the Laver Cup court?

The court is a hard court – but with a slight difference.

Developers have added sand into the court mix to slow the play down, which has resulted in slightly longer rallies compared to standard hard courts.
