Summer 2022 is almost upon us – and we couldn’t be happier about it!

It’s time for sunshine, warm weather, days at the beach, picnics in the park, music festivals galore, bank holidays, and for schoolchildren: the six-week summer break.

Many of us use the summer months to take some annual leave and enjoy a hot holiday abroad – while for others it’s the perfect chance to set up a sun lounger in the garden.

However you spend your summer, when exactly is it set to start in 2022?

Here’s what you need to know.

When does summer 2022 start?

From a meteorological perspective, the seasons are broken up into three-month blocks, with summer starting at the beginning of June.

It continues through July and August, ending on August 31. Autumn would then start in September, winter would begin in early December, and March 1 would usher in spring.

By that logic, we’re technically in summer from June 1 onwards.

However, if you want an exact astrological date, then summer technically starts on the summer solstice – also known as midsummer and as the longest day of the year.

In 2022, the summer solstice is happening on Tuesday, June 21.

During this time, the sun is at its highest point in the sky – as the Earth’s axis is tilted closer to the sun than at any other time during our planet’s 365-day rotation.

Later in the year, there’s an autumn equinox, winter solstice and spring equinox, which also help mark the changing seasons – with the winter solstice signifying the shortest day of the year.

Keep in mind that the above dates apply only to the northern hemisphere, of course.

In the southern hemisphere, where you’d find Australia, New Zealand and most of South America, the summer solstice won’t begin until December 21, 2022. In June, they’ll have a winter solstice.
