Can Nintendo be predicted? (Picture: Salvo Lo Cascio and Riccardo Cambò Breccia)
Readers discuss the games they’d like to see launch alongside Nintendo’s next console, from a new 3D Mario to Metroid Prime 4.
The subject for this week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Onibee and was based on the assumption that the new console will be roughly as powerful as a PlayStation 4 and that Nintendo wouldn’t release all its big hitters at once.
Almost all the suggestions were very plausible, with 3D Mario being an obvious guess – although no one mentioned the long-standing rumour of a new 3D Donkey Kong. Interestingly, many did talk about a new top-down Zelda, which isn’t a rumour but apparently would be warmly welcomed.
I’d buy that for a dollar
Normally, I’d want a Zelda game ASAP with a new Nintendo console, but I’m still playing through Tears Of The Kingdom. If the rumours are true regarding 4K upscaling, I’d imagine we could see Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The Kingdom receiving patches to allow for 4K output. Honestly though, I’d be unlikely to replay them so soon.
If Metroid Prime 4 hasn’t made an appearance by the Switch 2’s release, I’d love to see it. But again, it’s not really a system seller and I think the general public would be disappointed if that was the flagship launch title. So, perhaps a new 3D Mario game? They are usually fantastic, and it has been a fair while since Odyssey.
I’m incredibly intrigued as to what Nintendo do with Mario Kart, as 8 is still going strong and receiving content. Would they continue to sell it, keep adding content and simply add a patch for 4K? Or would they release Mario Kart 9 as a Switch 2 exclusive?
If the Switch 2 can offer PlayStation 4 level visuals then I can see third parties re-releasing lots of PlayStation 4 games for the new console, which would actually help fill the gap between first party exclusives and please a lot of Switch 1 owners. Elden Ring on Switch 2? I wouldn’t say no.

Slow and steady
What Nintendo did so successfully with the launch of the Switch was to stretch out a load of really prominent titles over at least the first year. These dropped fairly regularly and, for a good while, it just seemed like they were dropping hit after hit and I think this created a real positive vibe around the machine.
Mainline Zelda and ARMS at launch, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, mainline 3D Mario. That’s an incredible first year or so and I expect they’ll follow, roughly, the same template over the initial launch of Switch 2.
As a vague guess I’d suggest it will launch with a spruced up Tears Of The Kingdom, a cross-gen Metroid, and a couple of smaller Snipperclips/1-2-Switch style games. A couple of months in and perhaps this gen’s ARMS equivalent or even a sequel, followed by the 3D Mario six months …read more
