Wayne Rooney hailed England after Gareth Southgate’s side opened their World Cup campaign with a fantastic 6-2 win against Iran.

A brace from Bukayo Saka and goals from Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish, Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling gave the Three Lions an impressive win in Doha.

Though England were favourites going into the game, few felt the Three Lions would record such a dominant victory – particularly as they had gone over a year without a competitive victory.

With Wales and the United States drawing last night, it means England could progress to the knockout stages with a victory against the States on Friday.

Rooney will be keeping a keen eye on that game, given his country comes up against the nation he resides in now as the manager of DC United.

But the former Manchester United captain is already impressed with what he saw from the Three Lions, with Rooney taking to Instagram to hail the side.

‘What a start lads,’ said Rooney

‘Let’s keep it going.’

Southgate opted for a 4-3-3 against Iran, with a front three of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling.

Though all impressed, Rashford and Grealish scored from the bench and are pushing for a start against the USMNT.

However, it’s likely Southgate will stick with the same side before rotating against Wales, should the Three Lions win.
