The Walking Dead might have only just aired its last ever episode, but fans have already been informed that a different ending was filmed and cut.

The post-apocalyptic drama came to its conclusion after 12 years and 11 seasons, casting its eye towards a more hopeful future for the survivors.

The Commonwealth was saved after Pamela Milton (Laila Robins) was defeated, with the remaining communities in the series left to rebuild.

In the final few minutes, we were then teased about three spin-offs from the zombie survival series, featuring three main characters.

However, it’s been revealed that the ending we saw – featuring Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) – might not have been the original idea.

The Walking Dead director Greg Nicotero said: ‘There was a scene that we had shot, but when it was decided to put the coda in we felt like it would conflict with the Rick and Michonne bit. So we took it out.’

The three spin-offs are set to follow the progress of Daryl (Norman Reedus), Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and Rick and Michonne respectively.

And speaking to Insider, another source with close ties to the series gave a little more information about the writers’ original plans for the finale.

‘After Daryl rode off [in the finale], we cut forward to the Freedom Parkway, outside Atlanta — the iconic shot of Rick riding down from the pilot.’

‘We see a modified van, with a young woman and man in the front seats (in their twenties). And through the scene, we come to realize it’s adult RJ and Judith.’

‘As RJ speaks over the radio, he finishes with: “If you can hear me, answer back. This is Rick Grimes.” Then we end with the voice of a survivor answering back.’

That scene was removed in favour of teasing the spin-offs that The Walking Dead has planned, with Rick Grimes himself appearing in the final scene.

He appeared alongside Michonne who, a year after Rick leaves behind a journal, finds Rick’s possessions on Bloodsworth Island in Maryland.

The first spin-offs from The Walking Dead are set to premiere in 2023.
