Mani, the bassist of Stone Roses, has been left devastated after the death of his wife from cancer.

Imelda Mounfield has died at the age of 52, her family have confirmed.

The news was announced on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday afternoon by Happy Mondays member Rowetta

‘So beautiful, so brave, so LOVED. We’re all going to miss you @imeldamounfield,’ she wrote.

‘All my thoughts and love to Mani and your beautiful, precious boys and love to all Imelda’s family and friends.’

Mountfield, an events agent, was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in November 2020.

Since then, she and her husband Mani have hosted several charity auctions to raise funds for The Christie Hospital, The Stockport Charitable Trust and Maggie’s.

Speaking previously about the fundraisers, Mountfield shared how both charities had supported her.

‘Cancer affects not just the person who has it, but everyone around them, and I hope that by investing in some more research, we can help alleviate some of the devastation caused to families,’ she explained.

Before their latest auction, she said Maggie’s had ‘supported us from the start’, with counselling and using resources to help explain to their children the enormity of cancer and its effects on the whole family.

‘It’s a continuing battle for me, and I’ll be using their services more in the future,’ she added.

Among those paying tribute to Imelda following the news of her passing included Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown who wrote: ‘RIP @imeldamounfield. GOD BLESS MANI and his boys X’

Happy Mondays drummer Gaz Whelan said: ‘Woke up to messages …absolutely gutted…this time last year we were all together on holiday…. Like Mani says..Manchester music family we are one …. So loved the whole family….. PEACE xx.’

Speaking to ITV News last year, Mounfield said her diagnosis ‘was a huge shock for our family and friends, because I wasn’t poorly’.

‘The doctors didn’t know how I would respond to chemo, but I responded quite well. I’ve been on quite a big journey over the last two years,’ she said.

Earlier this month, Pete Garner, the original bassist in The Stone Roses, died at the age of 59.

Born Gary Mounfield, Mani left school aged 16 in 1979 and joined The Stone Roses a decade later.

Playing on both of the band’s albums, he was in Stone Roses until they disbanded in 1996 and went on to join Primal Scream.
