As a comedian with a darker edge, Ricky Gervais is no stranger to backlash but people are furious over his latest comments where he pokes fun at his own age.

The Office star ended up being trolled on X – formerly Twitter – after announcing his hit tour Armageddon would be coming to Netflix on Christmas Day.

‘Happy Birthday, Jesus!’ he wrote to which a fan asked: ‘Is it suitable to watch with my Nan and Gramp on Christmas Day?’

In response to the question, Ricky joked: ‘Depends. Do they enjoy watching a middle age man swearing, joking about the holocaust and pretending to w*** off a paedophile?’

His holocaust and paedophile jokes weren’t what people took issue with however, it was him calling himself ‘middle aged’.

Ricky is 62 years old, which many fans felt doesn’t qualify as middle aged – and told him as much.

‘Calling yourself middle aged at 62 is a bit of a stretch,’ replied one user as another wrote: ‘Sir you are a pensioner.’

A third scathed: ‘You consider yourself middle age? That’s funny.’

Ricky was called ‘brave’ by someone else while numerous fans were just shocked to learn he wasn’t in his mid 40s.

Clearly fans see the Derek star as frozen in time as he was 40 when he starred in the hit show The Office way back in 2004.

He played David Brent in the original version of the popular sitcom, of which the subsequent US version has become one of the few successful adaptations of British shows.

‘Mental that he’s 62,’ wrote one fan as someone else added: ‘I thought this guy was like 45, 62 is crazy.’

‘Wow he looks good for his age,’ complimented another.

One helpful commenter responded with the definition of ‘middle aged’ which encompasses anyone aged 45 to 65 – proving Ricky right.

The star has just finished his mammoth tour, breaking records on his Canadian leg when he performed at the sold-out Scotiabank Arena in Toronto in August to 20,000 fans.

He was the first British comedian to do so and only months after becoming a Guinness World Record holder as the comedian with the most lucrative single night of stand-up comedy.

At his Hollywood Bowl performance in California, Ricky banked £1.4 million for the performance, pushing his net worth up to a whopping £132 million.
