House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has warned congressional lawmakers that they could be issued with $5,000 fines if they evade metal detectors that were installed in the wake of the Capitol riots last week.
“It is tragic that this step is necessary, but the Chamber of the People’s House must and will be safe,” she said, according to The Hill.
Under the proposed rules, members who fail to walk through the detectors will face a $5,000 fine for their first offence and a $10,000 fine for their second, which would be deducted from their salaries, The Hill reported. Pelosi said she would introduce new security rules on January 21 for the House to vote on.
It comes after House Democrats opted to issue fines on lawmakers for refusing to wear masks on the floor.
Multiple Republican lawmakers have attempted to bypass the new metal detectors, which were installed this week after the failed insurrection by pro-Trump supporters on January 6 claimed 5 lives including that of a Capitol Police officer.
According to a HuffPost report, around 10 House Republicans walking into the Chamber on Wednesday night to vote on impeachment proceedings against President Trump walked around the metal detectors, including Reps. Ralph Norman, Scott Perry, and Jeff Duncan.
Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert on Tuesday walked through the detectors with her bag but refused to comply when the machines started beeping, according to a Washington Post report. The newly elected Congresswoman released an advert earlier in January in which she pledged to carry a handgun in Congress.
Capitol Police are prevented by the Constitution from detaining members of Congress and appeared confused about how to respond, HuffPost reported.
Some officers are reportedly angry that Republicans are refusing to submit to the new security measures, telling Buzzfeed that they would not be surprised if some lawmakers helped to organize last week’s riots.
Ali Alexander, who organized the ‘Stop the Steal’ march which preceded last week’s riots, said three GOP congressmen helped him to plan the event, which took place as Congress prepared to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory.
Pelosi was on Wednesday heard asking Capitol Police officers to move the detectors closer to the door so they were unable to avoid the machines, per a Daily Mail report. Officers eventually set up tables in an effort to block Republicans from walking around the detectors, the Mail reported.
