There’s just a few weeks left for Netflix viewers to watch the film adaptation of Matilda the Musical.

The movie based on the West End stage show, which itself was inspired by Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel, was released in 2022.

It starred Alisha Weir as the highly intelligent and bookish young girl, as well as Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as her parents Mr and Mrs Wormwood, Lashana Lynch as her teacher Miss Honey and Emma Thompson as her school’s terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull.

Following a theatrical release, it was later released on Netflix.

The film holds an impressive 93% rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes, with many fans sharing their love of the ‘magical’ movie on there.

‘One of the best adapted musicals of a movie ever!!!!’ Michael posted.

‘What an absolute masterpiece. I love Tim Minchin’s music in this, and the acting is fantastic,’ Hardy shared.

‘An absolute British triumph for an adaptation of a Road Dahl classic, trumping the American original (which I still love). With a Tim Minchin masterclass in how to write catchy, hilarious and emotional songs. Managing to make me shed a tear whilst immediately laughing. Alongside the choreography and remaining true to the book, makes this the perfect ode to Mr Dahl. Highly recommend,’ Jack added.

Many others said this was ‘the only musical I’ve ever enjoyed’ while some also admitted they were left ‘in tears’ tuning in.

In Metro’s review of the film, it was called ‘far superior’ to the 1996 version starring Mara Wilson and Danny DeVito.

‘A rabble-rousing delight, guaranteed to have children jumping on their seats and cheering along to “We are revolting children”, it could well become a generational classic,’ it read.

Although fans were initially left furious after the movie was delayed being released on Netflix in the UK and Ireland, it was then made available on June 25 last year.

However, in just over three weeks it will be taken down from the platform, with the movie to now be available to stream only until Christmas Day.

When the film was first released Tim Minchin, who was the composer and lyricist for the musical and movie, said that they ‘preferred audiences to see the film in a cinema.’

‘The large format and excellent sound do justice to the incredible detail of the work. I know not everyone can afford it, but if you can, and you’re a fan of the musical, I do think being in the UK – the only place in the …read more
