My mum invited 30 people to my wedding — but won’t pay for them

Wedding planning isn’t easy, but one of the most challenging aspects has to be working out who makes the cut for the guest list.

And one bride has found herself in a particularly tricky situation, as she’s oversubscribed with wedding guests after her mother sneakily invited an extra 30 people to her big day.

But the real kicker is that her mum is now refusing to pay for the additional costs.

At £120 per head, the total cost of those guests is £3,600 – a cost the bride told her mother she would have to front herself if she wanted them there.

‘I’m planning my wedding with a budget for 200 people,’ the bride wrote on Reddit. ‘At the beginning of the planning process, I told my parents that they could invite 20 guests each. If they wanted to invite more than 20 guests, they would have to cover the costs of any additional guests.’

Despite this already generous offer, her mother ended up inviting 50 guests in total. This means she has to pay for the extra 30, but with the vendor payments due, the cash is nowhere to be seen.

‘She’s refusing to cover her costs. She’s playing the victim,’ the bride added. ‘I am really at a loss here.’

Her mother told her that ‘she can’t afford to pay as agreed’ and that she would ask the additional guests to cover their own costs for the wedding.

She’s also said that she’s attempting to secure a bank loan to cover the costs – either way, she’s not paying the bill as agreed.

The mother-of-the-bride even went as far to say her daughter has ‘killed all her excitement and spirit’ and that she won’t ‘enjoy’ the wedding, so she should ‘remove her and her guests from the guest list’.

Understandably stressed, the bride added: ‘Our budget has already gone way over and I can’t stretch myself to cover these unexpected costs.’

The average cost of a UK wedding

A UK wedding costs on average an eye-watering £20,700, according to Hitched.

About 65% of couples are spending more than £15,000 on their big day and 59% of couples have found themselves having to increase their budget too.

For this bride, she’s already shelling out a minimum of £24,000 for her big day, without the cost of the additional guests her mother won’t pay for.

The wedding is also larger than average, with the typical amount of guests being 80.

The comments in the subreddit @AmItheA**hole staunchly supported the bride-to-be, reminding her it’s her wedding and not her mother’s.

‘You told her clearly what the limits were. She knowingly exceeded them,’ wrote @Edymnion. ‘You’re on a budget, they either need to cover their costs, she does, or they’re just not invited. That …read more
