Faced with a blank card this Mother’s Day, it’s easy to get writer’s block.

No matter how much you love your mum, trying to get your feelings down on paper can make your mind go blank.

Do you write a long tome about all the wonderful things she’s done for you? Maybe something funny to make her smile (along with that last-minute gift).

Or, if you’ve got a trickier relationship, how do you write something from the heart that feels genuine?

This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, March 19. It’s a time to celebrate all mums – whether they’re biological, adoptive, a step-mum or just a caring, wonderful woman who’s a maternal figure in your life. And to remember those who are sadly no longer with us.

Luckily, we’ve got plenty of ideas on how to make writing your Mother’s Day card a piece of (chocolate) cake.

Here are some suggestions to get you started.

What should I write in a Mother’s Day card?

Moonpig has some cracking suggestions – here are some of our favourites.

Thanks for not only being my Mum, but my very best friend. Happy Mother’s Day to the best person I know.

Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.

A mother is your first friend, your best friend, your friend forever.

Everything I am, you helped me to be.

And if you’re keeping it light-hearted:

Congratulations Mum, you raised a total legend. Have a great day!

Mum, I’ll even wash the dishes today – imagine that!

Or you can go with Funky Pigeon’s meaningful ideas:

You are my rock, my confidante, and my best friend. Thank you for always being there for me.

You’re my favourite role model and I hope one day to be as strong as you are.

I know I can call you anytime. Thank you for your constant love throughout everything.

I know I should say it more often, but today seems quite timely: I love you, mum!

I love you, mum! I thought you should know how much you mean to me, especially today… Lots and lots of love.

For everything you do for us every single day – thank you mum! Have the best Mother’s Day of all!

Thank you for being there every day with just the love I needed.

Mum, what’s so wonderful about this card… is the person holding it!
