Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has emerged as a candidate to replace Erik ten Hag as Manchester United boss, with initial contact already made with his representatives, according to reports.

Ten Hag’s future is hanging in the balance after a disappointing second season in charge of the Red Devils has left them sitting eighth in the Premier League with two games to play.

The Dutchman could still end the campaign on a high in the final two league matches against Newcastle and Brighton, followed by the FA Cup final against Manchester City. Alternatively it could be something of a nightmare climax.

A decision is yet to be made on whether Ten Hag will still be in charge next season, but Manchester United are already considering possible replacements for the former Ajax boss.

The Guardian report that former Red Devils coach and current Ipswich manager McKenna is on the shortlist of candidates to take over from Ten Hag.

The 38-year-old was on the coaching staff at Old Trafford from 2016-21 before taking his first role in management at Portman Road, taking charge in December 2021.

The Northern Irishman has been a roaring success since then, leading the Tractor Boys to back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League.

The report stats McKenna is under ‘serious consideration’ and contact has been made between United and his representatives, although discussions are at a very early stage.

Ipswich are clearly keen to keep hold of the man who has brought them up from League One and he has shown loyalty to the club, rejecting an approach from Crystal Palace earlier this season when they dismissed Roy Hodgson.

However, Manchester United would be a very different proposition to the Eagles and potentially much harder to turn down if they officially come calling.

Brighton are also reportedly keen on McKenna if Roberto De Zerbi leaves the club this summer, linked with Bayern Munich and clubs in his native Italy.
