Luke Shaw says he ‘wasn’t surprised’ to see Erik ten Hag remain at Manchester United, backing the manager to bring more success to Old Trafford.

After months of speculation surrounding his future, Ten Hag was confirmed to be staying on as United boss, with his contract being extended until 2026.

The Red Devils endured their worst Premier League season in 2023/24, finishing eighth, but they ended the campaign on a high by winning the FA Cup.

New minority owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS conducted an end-of-season review and interviewed possible replacements before deciding that Ten Hag was the right manager to take the club forward.

While, the rumour mill kept everyone guessing whether the Dutchman would be sacked or not, United defender Shaw says the contract extension was not a shock for him.

‘Firstly, I think it wasn’t really a surprise. He was always going to sign,’ the England left-back said during a press conference at Euro 2024.

‘I think everybody is very pleased. He’s had a trophy in each season and there’s been a bit of success. I definitely think there’s more to come.’

Shaw missed much of last season through injury, with his absence greatly felt on United’s team, but with INEOS changing things up behind the scenes there is hope that the Red Devils can bounce back after years of pain.

‘I don’t want to talk too much about Manchester but [the atmosphere at the club] is in the right place now,’ Shaw added.

‘With the boss signing a new contract and the new owners coming in, things are looking really positive. There’s a big buzz around the place.

‘I can definitely now see things are much better than they have been.’

Shaw’s focus is all on England’s Euros semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday night, a game he could start in having made his return from a lengthy injury in the last match against Switzerland.

And the 28-year-old revealed that Dutchman Ten Hag did send a ‘little cheeky message’ after the fixture was confirmed, though refused to reveal what exactly was said.

‘Ask him!’ Shaw jokingly told reporters.
