Latest money news: Fears 7,700,000 households could struggle to heat their homes this winter

Welcome to Metro’s money blog as today we look into concerns that millions of households could struggle to heat their homes this winter.

The Ofgem energy price cap is going up by 10% today, meaning bills will also be rising by an average of £149 a year.

The increase comes just in time for temperatures to drop as people consider turning the heating back on.

Figures from The Resolution Foundation thinktank estimate 7.7million households are likely to struggle to heat their homes this winter.

This includes the majority of families with children, and the research found 77% of single-parent households are likely to experience ‘fuel stress’ this winter – AKA spending more than 10% of their income solely on heating their home.
