Jurgen Klopp has revealed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s mother passed on her gratitude ahead of his final game in charge of Liverpool, while opening up on her initial fears when he replaced Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool’s final match of the season against Wolves promises to be an emotional occasion at Anfield, with supporters set to say their goodbyes to a manager who has written himself into the club’s folklore over the last nine years.

Though the Reds ultimately fell short in their charge for a second Premier League under Klopp, the German did manage to add to his trophy haul earlier this season as his side triumphed over Chelsea in a dramatic Carabao Cup final.

The iconic 56-year-old, formerly of Borussia Dortmund and Mainz, leaves enormous shoes to fill on Merseyside and it appears Arne Slot – currently in charge of Feyenoord – will be the man to come in and succeed him in the summer.

Speaking to The Athletic last month, Alexander-Arnold lifted the lid on the squad’s initial reaction to Klopp’s bombshell news as he took his mind back to that fateful day in January.

The Liverpool and England right-back explained: ‘It started like a normal day. Then the manager called a meeting at 10:30am, which we had never had before, so everyone was like, “What’s going on?”.

‘He came into the changing rooms and told us there was news breaking as he was speaking. So we found out as players at the same time as everyone else but he told us personally.

‘He said that this had to be his last season, that he needed a break to spend time with his family. I didn’t know what to do.

‘You think, “Is this a joke?”. None of us were expecting it.

‘After he left the room, everyone was just sat there thinking, “Has that just happened?”. Then you have to get on with it, going out to train in an hour, doing your job.’

Alexander-Arnold and co have since had time to let Klopp’s impending departure sink in and will no doubt be hoping to give the German the perfect send-off at Anfield this weekend.

During a wide-ranging interview with The Anfield Wrap, Klopp revealed Alexander-Arnold’s mum, Dianne, had paid him a visit at the training ground to pass on her best wishes and say thank you.

‘This morning Trent’s Mum was here and wanted to say thank you and goodbye. And she told me what she thought when Brendan left and I came in,’ he explained.

‘She thought, because they told her before when Trent was even younger, “When your boy is that age you need an English manager because managers from other countries don’t look at the academy”.
