Heinz has released a new flavour of ketchup, and shoppers are intrigued.

While Heinz, the nations favourite ketchup brand, has mixed things up in the past, with flavoured ketchups such as curry, pickle, jalapeno and chilli, the latest release is proving controversial.

The brand’s Smokey Bacon flavour ketchup was revealed in a post on Instagram by UK Newest Foods this week, and comments were mixed.

‘Oh, my days!’ wrote one user, Sarah, while Trevor commented, ‘I hope it tastes like Frazzles,’ referencing the nostalgic bacon-seasoned crisps.

Another, Mike, added that while the flavour was ‘unusual,’ he reckons it will be ‘surprisingly nice.’

However, others were less convinced.

‘Disgusting,’ wrote Omar, a comment which was echoed by Lily May who said it ‘looks rank.’

If you want to try it for yourself, Smokey Bacon Ketchup is on sale at Iceland and The Food Warehouse currently, and is priced at £2.50 for 460 grams. It will also be available to buy from Sainsbury’s nationwide from Wednesday April 10 for £3.39.

Thiago Rapp, Head of Heinz comms and brand build said: ‘Following the success of our Pickle Flavour Tomato Ketchup last year, we know what we’re doing when it comes to launching delicious new twists to your favourite Heinz Tomato Ketchup – and this one is nothing short of sizzlingly-delicious!’

It isn’t the first time Heinz has left shoppers conflicted over its products.

Last year, the brand brought out ketchup flavoured pasta sauce, to the dismay of Italians everywhere.

While a survey of 2,000 UK consumers for Heinz found that more than half (59%) of people think it’s positively blasphemous to put ketchup on pasta, 24% have no problem with the idea.

At the time, Heinz’s ventures director Caio Fontenele said: ‘Never say never! Whether ketchup was originally intended to go on pasta or not, we couldn’t help but listen to the love our fans share on social media for the combination.

‘So, we’ve brought together our Heinz Pasta Sauce and Heinz Tomato Ketchup to give you the pasta sauce we’ve all been dreaming of. While some might say it’s ridiculously wrong, we think it’s simply, ridiculously good.’
