Glycerine is the sleeper skincare hero that gives your complexion a boost say beauty gurus. Here we find out why.

Among an endless list of shiny new skincare ingredients, one of the most common and long-used is regaining prominence.

Experts are once again championing glycerine as an underrated powerhouse that provides myriad premium benefits yet doesn’t swing a hefty price tag.

Usually derived from vegetable oils, glycerine is a super-hydrator that draws moisture into deep surface layers of the skin – and when used in thicker consistencies, prevents it from evaporating again.

But as glycerine is naturally present in the body, it is recognised and absorbed by our skin when applied, allowing it to easily activate other benefits.

‘Glycerine is definitely an unsung hero,’ enthuses Dr Anita Sturnham, GP and aesthetic doctor. ‘It is a natural humectant, making it great for boosting skin hydration and conditioning the skin barrier as well as supporting healthy cell repair.

‘As a great multitasking ingredient, glycerine works well in cleansers, toners, serums, moisturisers and masks. Because it plays well with other actives, it’s often added to formulations with other hydrating and skin-conditioning ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and vitamin E.’

Glycerine works on any skin type. ‘It’s non-pore-clogging, and healthy skin is hydrated skin,’ adds Sturnham. ‘Those prone to dehydration, dryness and sensitivity will really benefit. There have been studies that show glycerine is helpful for inflammatory skin issues too.’
