Frank Lampard wants Luke Shaw to start for England in their Euro 2024 semi-final after the dramatic penalty shootout victory over Switzerland.

The Three Lions converted five superb spot-kicks in the shootout in Dusseldorf after the quarter-final tie finished 1-1.

Despite going through, England flattered to deceive for much of the match – as they have done throughout the Euros – and trailed with 15 minutes remaining as Breel Embolo gave Switzerland a late lead.

But Bukayo Saka rifled home England’s 80th-minute equaliser before Gareth Southgate’s side showed class and composure in the shootout.

Attention almost immediately turned to Wednesday’s semi-final and Lampard wants Manchester United defender Shaw to start after he got his first minutes at the Euros against Switzerland.

Shaw, who has been recovering from a long-term hamstring injury, provided England more balance and control on the left-hand side following his introduction in the 78th minute.

‘I think if he is fit he starts,’ Lampard said of Shaw on BBC’s coverage of the quarter-final victory. ‘He gives England that balance. He looked pretty good when he came on. If he’s fit I would play him.’

Ex-England defender Rio Ferdinand added: ‘Luke Shaw gave us that balance again.’

Asked if he will start the semi-final, Ferdinand said: ‘Maybe. It’s a big call. Look him in the eye and ask him. If he gives you the right answer he plays.’
