So far we’ve seen Emmerdale lawyer Ethan Anderson (Emile John) as a responsible, sensible character. He’s even been accused of being ‘boring’ by former lover Marcus Dean (Darcy Grey) because of his quiet, uncontroversial approach to life.
Well, he is a lawyer after all and standards must be maintained, but in upcoming episodes we may be about to see a different side of him emerge.
‘A certain situation is a catalyst for Ethan completely having his life implode on him,’ Emile John revealed to Inside Soap magazine. ‘In the beginning it’s out of necessity, he has to do certain things to get himself out of trouble.’
While Ethan’s actions are at first a reaction to the events around him, Emile suggested that it could trigger quite a change in his character.
‘I do wonder if he started taking a liking to being a bit more of a bad boy… I’m looking forward to filming that!’

We saw earlier this year that Ethan’s dad Charles (Kevin Mathurin), Emmerdale’s vicar, also has a darker side to him. This surfaced when his own father, Victor (Eddie Osei), was released from prison and arrived in the village to try to reconcile with his wife Claudette (Flo Wilson) and become part of the family.
We discovered that Eddie’s criminal past had led to terror for Claudette and had blighted Charles’s childhood, so when Charles saw an opportunity to get rid of Victor he took it by planting stolen goods on him. Soon afterwards, Victor died of a brain aneurysm.
Charles has let his mother and son carry on believing that Victor was guilty. Emile John told us on the red carpet at the Inside Soap Awards that this secret was still bubbling away in the Anderson family.

‘I think [Ethan] will find out,’ he revealed to us. ’As soon as he finds out that Charles has framed his own dad to make his dad look like a criminal, he’ll definitely have some words to say about that, I think.’
Whether that’s the incident that brings about Ethan’s switch to ‘bad boy’ we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s in his DNA to be hiding a more violent side underneath his calm exterior – just like his dad and his granddad. Emile is looking forward to the new storyline.
