Former Arsenal, Chelsea and England full-back Ashley Cole is being targeted by a number of Championship clubs and is likely to make his first move into management in the near future.

The 43-year-old is currently on the coaching staff at Birmingham City, joining the club in October 2023 when Wayne Rooney was appointed manager and remaining after the Manchester United legend was sacked soon after.

Cole has also gained coaching experience at Derby and Everton, while also working alongside England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley, winning the European Under-21 Championship last summer.

His growing CV has attracted the attention of clubs considering a change in the dugout, with the Mirror reporting that ‘a string of Championship clubs’ are keen on Cole.

The clubs have not been named but the likes of Sunderland, Hull City and Plymouth Argyle are all currently looking for new managers.

The managerial situation at Cole’s club Birmingham is slightly unclear, with Tony Mowbray expected to return to take charge this summer after a break due to illness.

In his absence the Blues were relegated to League One, with interim boss Gary Rowett unable to save them from the drop.

Cole’s teams have certainly had mixed results since he took up coaching, but on joining Birmingham he said he is learning a lot from the positive and negative experiences.

‘[I have learned] a lot, good and bad,’ he said. ‘That is what rounds you as a coach. You will have challenges along the way and I don’t see it being any different here, it is football.

‘It is very difficult to win games, but when you look at the coaching staff we are willing to match the work ethic of the players, willing to give our all to be successful.’
