Catherine Zeta-Jones has admitted that the extraordinary success of Wednesday has taken her by surprise, saying that the Netflix series ‘turned out better than anybody anticipated’.

The release of the Addams Family spin-off on the streaming platform saw Jenna Ortega, 20, make her debut as the deadpan titular character, a role previously played by Christina Ricci in the 1990s movies.

Catherine, 53, swanned in as her ethereal mother Morticia Addams, with Luis Guzmán starring as her lovestruck father Gomez Addams.

Wednesday, which has officially been renewed for season 2, became the highest-rated Addams Family-related production on Rotten Tomatoes since the 1964 TV show following its release, racking up millions of viewers across the globe.

On Wednesday’s Lorraine, Catherine spoke to the ITV programme’s LA correspondent Ross King about Wednesday’s sensational achievements, while showering her on-screen daughter with praise.

‘When [executive producer] Tim Burton asked me to do it, it was like, “Whatever you want me to do, Tim.” And then the idea of me playing Morticia, which is such an iconic, wonderful, juicy character, was wonderful,’ she said.

The Chicago star continued: ‘But it turned out so much better than I think anybody anticipated. Jenna Ortega is just marvellous as Wednesday and through the eyes of Tim Burton, it’s a lot of fun.’

Catherine, who was standing next to her husband Michael Douglas, 78, added: ‘I’m really happy to be part of it, I must say.’

Michael then piped in to assert that his wife ‘killed it’ as Morticia. An apt choice of words for the Ant-Man star!

Following the confirmation that Wednesday would be back for a second season, Jenna shared her gratitude with her fans, tweeting: ‘Thanks to everyone who made this upcoming season possible. This has all been pretty surreal.’

The supernatural show received two nominations at the Golden Globe awards, for best musical or comedy TV series and best actress in a musical or comedy TV series for Jenna.

The lead actor has also received a nod at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for outstanding performance by a female actor in a comedy series, with the award ceremony due to take place in late February this year.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV. Wednesday is available to watch on Netflix.
