On Monday, Beyoncé’s cover photo and story for the September issue of Vogue were released.
Beyoncé turned down a traditional cover story interview and wrote her own longform captions to accompany her photos instead.
In one of her captions, Beyoncé discussed having an emergency C-section when she was pregnant with Rumi and Sir and described how hard it was on her body.

Beyoncé graced the cover of Vogue’s latest installment of their legendary September issue, and the photo is honestly spectacular.

While a traditional interview normally accompanies the cover photo, Beyoncé chose to write her own long form captions to correspond with her photos instead. The captions spanned several topics such as her latest pregnancy and what it felt like to get an emergency C-section.

“I was 218 pounds the day I gave birth to Rumi and Sir. I was swollen from toxemia and had been on bed rest for over a month. My health and my babies’ health were in danger, so I had an emergency C-section,” she wrote.

She went on to explain that after the surgery, her core “felt different.” Unlike her first pregnancy where she pushed herself to lose the baby weight in three months, after the twins were born she embraced her new body.

“During my recovery, I gave myself self-love and self-care, and I embraced being curvier. I accepted what my body wanted to be,” she wrote.

Body image played a big role in how Beyoncé wanted to appear in the photos shot by 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell. She wanted to set an example for other men and women who may be struggling with self acceptance.

“I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies,” she wrote. “That’s why I stripped away the wigs and hair extensions and used little makeup for this shoot.”
