Belle & Sebastian has cancelled its forthcoming tour just weeks after dates were announced.

The band confirmed on Tuesday that its North American tour would no longer go ahead, citing lead singer Stuart Murdoch’s declining health.

Murdoch suffers from myalgic encephalomyelitis and personally penned the statement announcing his band’s tour postponement.

‘Hi folks. It’s Stuart from Belle And Sebastian here. We are sorry to have to announce the cancellation of our North American tour for 2023,’ the hitmaker began.

‘As you might be aware my health took a dive around November 2022. While I am hoping that I will improve over the coming months, we felt it would be a safer route to cancel this tour and leave a clear path to recovery, rather than take a risk and have to cancel at the last minute.’

Murdoch continued: ‘We had a great plan in place, to release our second lp in six months and hit America up again! While the record made it out, we’re going to have to wait a bit longer until we can tour it.’

Thanks to everyone who bought tickets for the shows and for those of you who’ve reached out with love and support recently. We hope to be playing to you all soon. pic.twitter.com/Sjw7WL43S2

‘We apologise again for the inconvenience we have caused you. Sincerely yours, Stuart,’ the star concluded.

Speaking to Rolling Stone at the beginning of the year, Murdoch said he’d been battling myalgic encephalomyelitis for ‘thirty years’.

‘It’s not that I’m suddenly just taking time out to try and finish a book,’ he said.

‘It’s ME [myalgic encephalomyelitis], it’s chronic fatigue syndrome. Thirty years on and still dealing with the same old s**t.’

I’m getting slowly back on my feet after being quite unwell, using faith and love to charge my batteries again.. and a lot of help from family and friends.

We’re so sorry for any inconvenience caused to you. We sincerely hope we can make it up to you sometime in the future..

The band was also forced to cancel tours in autumn and winter 2022 due to Murdoch’s health, with the Scottish musician tweeting in November: ‘I’m getting slowly back on my feet after being quite unwell, using faith and love to charge my batteries again.. and a lot of help from family and friends.

‘We’re so sorry for any inconvenience caused to you. We sincerely hope we can make it up to you sometime in the future.’
