Bargain Hunt is usually a very polished affair, so viewers were understandably left confused after it appeared host Charlie Ross swore during a stressful auction.

The antiques expert, presenter and auctioneer is one of several hosts on the long-running program, which sees two pairs of contestants challenged to buy antiques from shops or a fair and then sell them in an auction for a profit.

In the episode that aired on BBC on Friday, Charlie was in Nottinghamshire, where experts Nick Hall and Jonathan Pratt were on hand to help the teams.

One of the teams were couple Sid and Steph, who decided to spend some of their money on a huge enamel sign that read: ‘Smoking strictly prohibited on any part of this premises.’

While it was covered in rust, they were told it was a ‘very collectable’ item, so decided to snap it up.

After some bartering, they picked it up for £155.

During the discussion between Charlie and Nick, they weren’t convinced the couple were going to make back anywhere near what they spent, estimating it would re-sell for about £30.

Right before the auction kicked off, Sid started to get cold feet about his purchase and said he simply selected it on ‘impulse’.

There were quickly five bids on the sign, however they were ‘not huge’.

Bidding started at £25, but all of a sudden, things took off.

As more and more bids were put in, Charlie exclaimed it was ‘amazing’.

‘With respect Sid,’ he added.

As bidding approached £100 Charlie couldn’t contain his excitement, and then appeared to drop some colourful language.

While he said ‘Ohh Sid’, it did appear like he had to think on his feet after first appearing to exclaim ‘Oh sh…’, before saving himself.

People watching on at home did question what they had just heard.

‘Did they just say oh s*** on Bargain Hunt,’ one viewer posted on Twitter.

Although the item only ended up selling for £95, leaving Sid and Nancy with a loss of £60, they finished their auction with a total loss of £5.

But with their competitors failing to make a profit too, and ending with a loss of £60, nearly breaking even was enough to get Sid and Steph over the line.

Bargain Hunt is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
