Assisted dying vote – take part in Metro’s poll

Campaigners supporting the assisted suicide bill hold placards at a demonstration outside The Palace of Westminster in central London, on November 29, 2024, as supporters and opponents of a bill to legalise euthanasia in the UK gather outside the Houses of Parliament while lawmakers debate the bill. MPs will today debate and vote on the new Assisted Dying Bill in parliament.

If passed, it would give terminally ill people in England and Wales the right to end their life.

Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, who introduced the bill, has called it the ‘safest choice’ for mentally competent adults at the end of their lives.

She says her bill is the only one in the world with ‘three layers of scrutiny.’ Those who want to end their lives must receive a sign-off from two doctors and a High Court judge.

Dignity in Dying claim the controversial bill is the ‘most detailed, robust proposal on assisted dying that Westminster has ever considered.’

It is, however, far from a foregone conclusion that it will be passed today, with critics arguing that it has been rushed.

They have claimed that MPs won’t have sufficient time to scrutinise the 40-page bill before the debate today, given it was first published just two weeks ago.
