Coronavirus vaccines are the world’s escape route out of a pandemic that has seen schools shut, flights grounded, and left millions dead.

A number have been approved in the West, most notably vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, and AstraZeneca-Oxford. They are all given as a shot in the muscle of the upper arm, and require two doses.

You might not get a choice as to which COVID-19 vaccine you get, but all three offer some protection against severe COVID-19, so the advice is to take one if you are offered it.

If you have questions about each of the vaccines — whether you’ve booked an appointment or not — then we’ve made a table that gives you the key information for each shot.

Speak with your doctor if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, have a specific medical condition, or take medicines. Experts expect COVID-19 vaccines won’t make you infertile.

Side effects could start within a day or two, and should go away within a few days.
