Lankford was fired on Friday and arrested by Hays County Sheriff’s Office. KVUE reported that she has been charged with aggravated assault, which is a second-degree felony.

“This afternoon, we fired one of our guest teachers for hitting and fighting with a student,” Principal Karen Zuniga wrote in a statement posted to Facebook. “Under no circumstance is that behavior tolerated at Lehman High School or in Hays CISD.”

The condition of the student is unclear, but KVUE reported that she was taken to the local hospital after being released to a parent. Lankford was transported to Hays County Jail, where she is currently being held.

Lankford was hired and attended a mandatory teacher orientation, which is required for all substitute teachers, at the end of August, KVUE reported. She worked her first job with the district on September 13, and Friday was her 18th job with the district.

“We are appalled at the actions of this former employee,” Tim Savoy, chief communication officer for Hays CISD, told KVUE. “There is absolutely no excuse or circumstance that can justify what you see unfold on the video. It is unconscionable what this adult did to one of our students.”
