High school senior Allison Closs brought a cardboard cutout of Danny DeVito as her prom date.
She told INSIDER that bringing “Danny” as a date had its challenges, but everyone she talked to was supportive.
Closs said her choice of DeVito may have been influenced by the YouTuber PewDiePie, who uses a cutout of DeVito for a recurring joke on his channel.

Allison Closs wanted nothing more than a nice night out for her senior prom, but she had trouble finding a date. So she took matters into her own hands and brought a cardboard cutout of Danny DeVito.

“When I looked on Amazon, there’s actually a nice variety of cardboard cutouts of Danny DeVito to choose from,” Closs told INSIDER. “So that was convenient.”

Bringing the “Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Matilda” star to the prom — held on Friday in Carlisle, Pennsylvania — was a challenge. Closs parked her car on the far end of the parking lot from the venue, and the weather was fierce. But once she made it, people enjoyed his presence.

“It was windy, and Danny was blowing around. I was trying to keep him under control and was grabbing him for dear life,” Closs said.

Closs’s prom date first became widely known after it was reported by a local ABC channel. But she didn’t plan to go viral. Closs makes short films and talks about books and life on her YouTube page and likes to make people laugh.

“I definitely struggled socially in high school,” she said. “And this was my last opportunity to really do something. [My YouTube channel] has really been boosting my confidence and willingness to put myself out there and do something crazy in public. I don’t think I would have been able to do something like this a few years ago.”

At prom, her friends we surprised. Even the ones who she told about the plan didn’t think she’d go through with it. And when she first told her parents about her plan to bring a cardboard cutout of Danny DeVito to prom, the reaction was mixed. Her father thought it was hilarious; her mother was more skeptical, but eventually warmed to the idea.

“Now she’s on the full Danny DeVito train,” Closs said. “I got her marathoning ‘Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ lately.

Closs said her teachers also joked about it.

“When I was giving them my ticket, they asked if Danny had one too,” she said. “I remember the principal, he said that Danny was a little over the age limit for a guest.” (Closs is 17 and Danny DeVito is 73.)

Why Danny DeVito? Closs told INSIDER that she considered Bill Nye the Science Guy, but settled on DeVito because she’s a fan of his oeuvre. She also said she may have been subconsciously influenced by the YouTuber PewDiePie — real name is Felix Kjellberg — who runs a vlog where he plays and comments on video games.
