Neighbours have announced the return of original cast member Peter O’Brien, who will be reprising his Shane Ramsay role.

The Australian actor, 64, originally appeared on the show from 1985 to 1987 before making a brief return in 2022 ahead of the show’s ‘finale’.

His arrival back in Erinsborough this time will coincide with the introduction of his son Max (Ben Jackson) as a new series regular.

Announcing the news in two separate social media posts this morning, Neighbours said: ‘After 10 years, a Ramsay is back on Ramsay Street!’

‘We’re thrilled to announce that Ben Jackson will soon be joining the cast as Max Ramsay. But what’s brought a member of the show’s original family back to Erinsborough? All will be revealed…’

They continued: ‘Shane Ramsay returns! Hot on the heels of his son, Max – Shane Ramsay will also be dropping by to visit Erinsborough.’

‘Peter O’Brien will be reprising his iconic role in the coming weeks.’

During his initial stint, champion swimmer Shane lived at No. 24 with his dad – also called Max (Francis Bell) – mum Maria (Dasha Blahova) and half-brother Danny (David Clencie).

The best mate of Des Clarke (Paul Keane) and Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis), he soon fell for stripper Daphne Lawrence (Elaine Smith) but their relationship soon fizzled out.

Later, he started RAGGS – the Ramsay and Gibbons Gardening Service – with next-door neighbour Clive Gibbons (Geoff Paine).

When his cousin Henry (Craig McLachlan) moved in, the two clashed and he decided to go travelling around the country on his motorbike.

The last time we caught up with Shane, he began a whirlwind romance with troublesome Izzy Hoyland (Natalie Bassingthwaighte) and planned to invest in Lassiter’s Hotel.

The pair are supposedly still together, having been referenced by her daughter Holly (Lucinda Armstrong-Hall) in recent episodes.

Fans have already flooded across X to express their excitement at Peter’s return, and the prospect of having an actual Ramsay back on Ramsay Street. It’s only right, given it was named after the family!

Shane Ramsay from the original Ramsay dynasty from episode 1? Well this has just made my morning, I hope we get Izzy news! Doesn’t Peter O’Brien look well, he hasn’t aged a day since the 80s! Can’t wait for this return and also a new Ramsay! #Neighbours https://t.co/3CNEJq43J7
