Here’s where to catch free outdoor movies in the SF Bay Area this summer

The moviegoing experience has certainly changed and broadened in recent years, but there’s still nothing like catching a flick in a park or at the beach with family or friends on a summer night. Especially when it’s free. Fortunately, several places still offer such an experience. Here’s a partial rundown.

Note: For the most part, you’ll want to bring your own chairs, blankets and a flashlight (to find your way back to the car). Dress for cooler (if not frosty) weather after the sun goes down. Most places allow picnics and are close to places where you can pick up some tasty grub and beverages.


The city offers Cinema at Sundown on three Fridays in August at Memorial Park Amphitheatre. Screenings start 8:15 p.m.

Schedule: Sing-along “Beauty and the Beast,” Aug. 10; “Coco,” Aug. 17; “Wonder Woman,” Aug. 24



The city hosts Moonlight Movies 6-10:30 p.m. on select Fridays on the Town Green, 400 Front St. Evenings kick off with kids’ crafts and other activities, family-friendly film screens around 8:15 p.m.

Schedule: “Coco,” July 13; “Wonder Woman,” July 27; “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” Aug. 10.



Picnic Flix screenings are at 8:30 p.m. (or dusk) at Emerald Glen Park; food trucks and other vendors are available.

Schedule: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” July 20; “Sing,” Aug. 17.



The city hosts free outdoor movie screenings at various parks through the summer, 6-10 p.m. Live music and other entertainment is followed by a movie around 8 p.m.

Schedule: “Cars 3” at Lorenzo Theatre; “Coco,” Aug. 10 at Meek Estate Park; “Despicable Me 3” at Adobe Park; “A Wrinkle in Time” at Adobe Park.


Mountain View

The Outdoor Summer Movie Series takes place 8:30 p.m. Fridays in various city parks.

Schedule: “Ferdinand” July 13 at Cuesta Park; “Despicable Me 3” July 20 at Sylvan Park; “Lego Ninjago” July 27 at Stevenson Park; “Cars 3” Aug. 3 at Eagle Park; “Smurfs: The Lost Village” Aug. 10 at Rengstorff Park; “Coco” Aug. 17 at Whisman Park.



Jack London Square hosts Waterfront Flicks on select Thursday nights on the Ferry Lawn. Funs begins just before sundown with trivia games, prizes and specials from area vendors. Screenings begin just after sundown.

The city screens family-friendly films at dusk Thursdays at Amador Valley Community Park. Games are kids activities are offered before showtime.

Redwood City

Movies on the Square are screened on a 25-foot surround-sound system 8:45 p.m. Thursdays in the city’s happening Courtyard Square; a limited number of chairs and tables are available.
