Why was everyone talking about Oakland’s Zendaya ahead of Oscars news?

The night before Hollywood was simulatanously celebrating and criticizing who had received Academy Awards nominations, the industry was abuzz about Zendaya.

That’s because the Oakland-born singer and actress had turned up on the red carpet at the 25th annual Critics Choice Awards wearing a stunning, shiny hot-pink ensemble that got everyone doing double takes.

Was Zendaya wearing what people thought she was wearing?

Yes, the 23-year-old actress and fashionista was wearing a breastplate that appeared perfectly molded to her torso. The breastplate, designed by Tom Ford, had a mock-neck and was cropped at the waist, Harpers Bazaar reported. Zendaya accompanied the breastplate with a fuchsia maxi skirt and waist-length braids.

The ensemble was the talk of Twitter all night long — until it was supplemented as a top trending topic by the Monday morning announcements of the Oscar nominations and Queen Elizabeth’s decision to let Prince Harry and Meghan Markle step down as senior members of the royal family and live part time in Canada.

It should be noted that Zendaya isn’t the first celebrity to don the breastplate. Gwyneth Paltrow will be seen wearing one for Harper Bazaar’s February 2020 cover, but the Goop founder is not upset that Zendaya may have stolen her thunder or even worn the breastplate better.

“Thank God I can say I have something in common with Zendaya,” wrote Paltrow underneath a post showcasing the California Shakespeare Theater alum on the red carpet, E! News reported.

Praise also came from Tracee Ellis Ross, Gigi Hadid and Alexa Demi, her co-star in the HBO drama “Euphoria.” Ariana Grande commented on the “warrior woman” Instagram post from Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach: “Incredible” and “Jesus Christ.”

Zendaya, born Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman, was at the Critics Choice Awards after being nominated for best actress in “Euphoria.” She grew up in Oakland, and attended the Oakland School for the Arts and training programs for young actors at CalShakes, where her mother was a house manager, and at the American Conservatory Theater. She also performed in productions at the Berkeley Playhouse and Palo Alto’s TheaterWorks.

Zendaya began her Hollywood career after scoring a role in the Disney Channel series “Shake It Up!” She has since competed on “Dancing With the Stars,” released a couple albums, started a fashion line and portrayed MJ in the latest “Spider-Man” movies.

Zendaya last created a stir on the red carpet — though through no fault of her own — after “Fashion Police” host Giuliana Rancic cracked a joke about her dreadlocks smelling of “patchouli oil” and “weed” at the 87th Academy Awards.

Zendaya took to Instagram to point out why the joke exploited cultural stereotypes and said that many …read more
