SAN FRANCISCO — A San Rafael resident has been arrested and charged in federal court with receiving child pornography from a then-12-year-old girl he allegedly met through a video-game chat room.
Robert Haeuser, 32, faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted of the lone charge. At his first court appearance Wednesday, Haeuser was ordered released from jail on a $25,000 unsecured bond, court records show.
The criminal complaint alleges that the FBI recovered chat records between Haeuser and a girl who told Haeuser she was 11 and 12 years old when they were talking. Haeuser allegedly engaged in sexually explicit conversations and received numerous nude pictures.
In one chat, Haeuser allegedly exchanged more than 20,000 emails and more than 13,000 text messages with the girl, starting in 2015, and continued to email her for a full year after she stopped responding to him in October 2016, authorities allege. He allegedly asked her for naked pictures as an incentive to help him lose weight.
In another chat, a month before the girl stopped responding to him, Haeuser allegedly lamented, “look at what I am! 27 years old, no job no degree … .”
The complaint says that the FBI interviewed the girl, who lives out of state, last August, and she confirmed having chatted with Haeuser after meeting him in the chat function of a cellphone game. The investigation started last March, when authorities received a tip that Haeuser was “grooming” the girl.
Haeuser is next due in court Dec. 13, records show.
