
SANTA CRUZ — A 28-year-old San Jose woman was killed Sunday night in a single-car crash not far from Highway 17 and the Glen Canyon area.
The woman was riding as a passenger with a 30-year-old San Jose man in a 2013 Volkswagon Golf around 9:45 p.m. Sunday. The car, traveling southbound on El Rancho Drive north of Hunt Court, was traveling at a high rate of speed before it veered off the road, struck a wooden utility pole, continued up an embankment, hit a tree and overturned according to the California Highway Patrol. Driver Jesse Vong suffered major injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Before being released to the hospital, Vong was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The female passenger, who has not yet been identified, was declared dead at the scene of the crash, according to the CHP.
