Police: California mother, teen son arrested after son shoots and injures toddler sibling

A San Bernardino mother and her 14-year-old son were arrested after the son allegedly discharged a gun and injured his 20-month-old half sibling, police said.

On Tuesday, July 20, 37-year-old Veronica Pyatt was driving in the area of 16th and E streets at 4:13 p.m. while her son was manipulating a loaded gun in the back seat, the San Bernardino Police Department said. The gun fired and Pyatt’s daughter was struck in the right upper leg, police said.

While her son told her the gun went off, Pyatt drove home to the 2700 block of North G Street and said that she did not realize her daughter had been struck, police said. Pyatt’s son then disposed of the gun and other evidence in a trash can while Pyatt unloaded groceries, police said.

Once inside, her son informed Pyatt that the toddler had been shot and Pyatt then took her daughter to the Community Hospital of San Bernardino, according to police. Hospital staff notified police and the toddler was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Pyatt and her son were placed under arrest on suspicion of multiple felony charges.

Police did not immediately respond to questions about the circumstances of the shooting.

The case was turned over to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.

The Department of Child and Family Services was notified of the incident and is investigating, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the incident was encouraged to contact Detective N. Alvarez at 909-384-4851 or at alvarez_ni@sbcity.org.
