Pair of San Mateo County grass fires force evacuation orders near Redwood City

REDWOOD CITY — A pair of two-alarm fires that broke out in grassy areas west of Redwood City have prompted evacuation orders for affected neighborhoods Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The first fire was reported at 2:22 p.m. at Edgewood Road and Crestview Drive on the northeastern perimeter of the Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve, according to the San Mateo County Office of Public Safety.

A second fire was reported two minutes later about one mile south on Colton Court, which is also near the park’s perimeter. Air tankers and other firefighting resources have been dispatched to the fires.

The Colton fire has prompted an evacuation order for areas north of Southview Way and Fox Hollow Lane, south of Hillcrest Way, east of West California Way and Hillcrest Way, and west of Emerald Estates Court and Jefferson Avenue.

An adjacent evacuation order was issued for an area north of Hillcrest Way, south of Mountain View Way, east of Sylvan Way and Glenloch Way, and west of Lakeview Way.

South of that, evacuation warnings — which urge residents to be on standby to leave their homes — were issued for the area north of Junipero Serra Freeway, south of Rocky Way and Southview Way, east of Junipero Serra Freeway, West Maple Way and Cañada Road, and west of Farm Hill Boulevard.

The fires broke out as the area saw high temperatures approaching 100 degrees. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
