One of the world’s most popular musicals is coming to S.F. Bay Area

There are some eye-popping stats associated with the musical “Chicago.”

Notably, it’s stands as the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. And it’s Broadway’s second longest-running musical overall, trailing only “The Phantom of the Opera.”

But its success has not just been confined to the Big Apple. It’s also set a record for the longest-running American musical in the history of London’s West End theater district.

Then, of course, is the whole 2002 film version – starring Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere – which went on to win six Academy Awards in 2003. One of those awards was for best picture, making “Chicago” the first musical to claim the film world’s biggest prize since 1968’s “Oliver!”

Locals can experience “Chicago” – whether for the first time or the 100th – when Broadway San Jose presents the Tony Award-winning musical Nov. 15-18 at San Jose’s Center for the Performing Arts.

The musical, which features a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, is set in 1920s-era Chicago and tells the story of housewife/dancer Roxie Hart, who sets a media circus in motion after killing her lover.

This national tour is directed by David Hyslop and choreographed by David Bushman.
