Nicole Kidman bared her soul personally and professionally in a new New York Times Magazine interview, in which she offers a rare glimpse into the two intense but “happy” years she and ex-husband Tom Cruise spent filming Stanley Kubrick’s divisive, sexually provocative drama “Eyes Wide Shut.”

“We were happily married through that,” Kidman, 53, said in an interview with the magazine published Monday. The Oscar winner dismissed the lore that grew up around the 1999 film, which mostly has had to do with Kubrick’s grueling, psychologically invasive process for directing the one-time Hollywood power couple.
Kidman and Cruise, 58, took two years out of their lucrative, high-profile careers to move to the U.K. with their two young children in order to work with the acclaimed “2001” director. They played a beautiful wife and her successful doctor husband whose marriage goes through a wringer of anguish over infidelity, emotional dishonesty, jealousy and sexual dysfunction.
“Eyes Wide Shut” is well known for its extravagant underworld orgy scene. But even that scene is overshadowed by the off-screen narrative of the mystique surrounding Cruise and Kidman’s once luminous marriage, which unraveled in 2001, two years after the film’s release.
Critics talk a lot about how the troubled marriage at the center of “Eyes Wide Shut” seemed to foreshadow Kidman and Cruise’s real-life messy split, as well as Cruise’s mid-2000s meltdown when he maniacally jumped on Oprah Winfrey’s couch to declare his love for Katie Holmes and bizarrely explained his allegiance to Scientology in one of the organization’s promotional videos.
“We loved working with (Kubrick),” Kidman told the Times magazine. “We shot that for two years. We had two kids and were living in a trailer on the lot primarily, making spaghetti because Stanley liked to eat with us sometimes.”
“We were working with the greatest filmmaker and learning about our lives and enjoying our lives on set,” continued Kidman, who is now married to singer Keith Urban. “We would say, ‘When is it going to end?’ We went over there thinking it was going to be three months. It turned into a year, a year and a half. But you go, ‘As long as I surrender to what this is, I’m going to have an incredible time.’”

To outsiders, the controlling, perfectionist director “appeared to get a kick out of exploring fissures in Cruise and Kidman’s real marriage,” according to a 2019 essay in The Independent to mark the film’s 20th anniversary.
Vanity Fair added in 2014: “Kubrick decided to find his story through psychoanalyzing his stars, prodding Cruise and Kidman to confess their fears about marriage and commitment in conversations with their director that the three vowed to keep secret.”
